Sant Miquel Castle

:
Maximum duration:

It’s a long itinerary through les Gavarres mountains to reach Sant Miquel castle, at the top of a 390-metres-hill in Vall de Sant Daniel (Girona).
From Llagostera, we’ll cross Pla de la Verneda to arrive at Dues Rieres (Cassà) to go up to Creu de les Monges and Santa Pellaia. We’ll keep on cycling to Sant Mateu del Montnegre and later, to els Àngels. We’ll go down the road to Casa de les Figues (signposted), where we’ll find a path on the right that will lead us to Sant Miquel. There are the remains of the ramparts, the 15th-century chapel and the Torre del Telègraf, the main element of the ensemble. This tower with an internal staircase was built in the 19th century and was a part of the optic telegraphy branch that connected Barcelona to France. This spot is a wonderful viewpoint on all sides. The 360-degree panorama goes from Canigó to the sea. We’ll see the Medes Islands, the Montgrí, the Gulf of Roses, all the little villages from the Empordà and the greenish Gavarres massif. At the other side, we’ll have superb views over Banyoles and its lake, Mont, Puigsacalm and its lighthouse, Guilleries, Montseny and the ville of Girona from a bird’s eye.
We’ll go down from Vall de Sant Daniel to Girona. On our way, we’ll find Sant Daniel monastery and Sant Pere de Galligants. We’ll cycle through Girona old town to the cycling trail (greenway) in order to come back.
This is a long and tough route to reach Sant Miquel, at one end of les Gavarres massif. However, we can take advantage of it and enjoy one of the most stunning panoramic views over the region.
